Old Ringtone Format
When mobile phone was invented, it used old ringing tone for incoming call alert. It's also known as monophonic ringtone, which used single instrument for the ringtone sound.After that, polyphonic ringtone was introduced, and it sounds better than monophonic.
Modern Ringtone
Nowadays, most of mobile phone plays real music as it's ringtone. The new sound is also known as Mp3 ringtone. For iPhone, only sound files with ".m4r" extension can be played as it's ringing tone.
